System Requirements

      Before you install VST Instruments & Effects, please make sure your computer fulfills the following requirements:

• Operating System : Windows® 98SE/ME, Windows® 2000, Windows® XP, Windows® Vista, Windows® 7.

• Linux Operating System, with the following requirements (Special Thanks to Paul Davis)

• Processor: Pentium®, Celeron® or equivalent - 500 MHz or more (recommended).

• RAM: 64 MB of memory minimum (128 MB or higher recommended)

• VST plug-ins can be "plugged in" to any host application that supports them allowing the same VST plug-in to be used with many different audio programs. The program wraps VST plugins so that they can be used in DirectX host applications, such as Cakewalk SONAR, Sonic Foundry Vegas, Syntrillium CoolEdit and many others. DirectiXer fully supports VST 2.0 instruments, exposing them as DXi instruments, and parameter automation recording and playback (host support is required).

• Via FXpansion's VST-to-RTAS Adapter: Converts VST plug-ins to Digidesign RTAS format for use in Pro Tools HD, LE, and M-Powered.

• Via FXpansion's VST to AudioUnit Adapter for Mac OS X: Converts VST plug-ins to Apple Audio Units for use in AU-compatible applications including Logic Pro, Garage Band and Digital Performer.

Limitations: 

Even if you have a VST 2.0, 2.3 compatible host it does not mean that the host uses all the features of the VST standard. This means that a feature in the plug-in might not work on a host that does not support that particular feature.

VST 2.0 Specs

Understanding VST

Generally the VST Protocol defines a simple method for implementing DSP algorithms for host CPU based audio systems. It allows signal processes to be very quickly developed avoiding much of the OS dependent issues or very specific DSP chip programming schemes. The result is that both writing and using a VST Plug-in is very easy compared with other systems.

What's new in VST 2.0?

Shortly after its first introduction, the VST Plug-in group was a rich source of ideas on how the VST-Plug-In specification could be extended. When other companies started to host VST Plug-Ins, the ideas for extensions on the host side grew too. The VST 2.0 Specification is the result of combined consultation, and builds on the VST 1.0 spec to bring about some exciting new possibilities.

Virtual Studio Technology plug-ins is developed and owned by Steinberg Soft- und Hardware GmbH. These are software versions of traditional recording studio hardware. Before VST you had to pay big money for these pieces of hardware, now you can buy the software version much cheaper. There is also a growing number of free and shareware plug-ins available. It is now possible to produce professional music using no hardware other than your PC.
