PROGRAMA

 

OBJECTIVES

 

1)      To improve the students’ ability to use the English language for expression and communication in connection with the five areas  into which geography is divided in its widest sense: physical, economic, political, social and cultural.

2)      To become acquainted with the present-day reality of the countries whose language they are learning, and with the similarities and differences between that reality and Argentina and Latin American reality.

3)      To improve their ability to explain charts, graphs and maps.

4)      To acquire background knowledge for further studies of British history and literature.

 

EDUCATIONAL GOALS

1)      To develop their ability to participate in teamwork

2)      To develop the ability to carry out simple research work

3)      To develop strategies for learning.

4)      To develop a critical but respectful attitude towards other people’s opinions, and towards other countries and their cultures

5)      To develop an interest in the leading English- speaking countries and their culture and appreciation of the place and role they have in the world and international affairs.

  METHODS

1)      Lectures and demonstrations

2)      Individual and group study and research

3)      The use of illustrative materials: maps, charts, picture, videos

4)      Recognition and drawing of maps

5)      Readings of newspaper and magazine articles.

INTRODUCTION

About the United Kingdom: The four nations, main features and brief historical analysis.

The study of the subject has been divided into five aspects

 

A)    Physical aspects

1)     Position 2) size 3) relief 4) climate 5) the coastline 6) islands 7) regional description .

 

B)    Economic aspects

1)     Primary (Farming, fishing and mining), manufacturing and service industries 2) The European Union . Energy. Transport and communication.

 

C) Political aspects

1)     The Monarchy  2) Parliament  3) Elections: political parties, 4) government departments, 5) Civil Service, 6) Local government, 7) overseas relations, The Commonwealth, 8) Defense,9) Justice and the law.

 

D) Social aspects

1)     Population: 1) Immigration and ethnic minorities,  2) towns, cities and conurbations , 3) Housing, 4) Health 5) The environment 6) Social welfare.

 

E) Cultural aspects

EVALUATION

Promotion with final examination. During the year, the students will be given several written exercises and texts apart from the term tests. Besides, they will have to hand in assingnments on the different topics dealt with and give oral presentations.

In the final examination the students will locate geographical features on a map, and will discuss topics presented on a card.
